Vendor Lock-in: The Handcuffs of Data Protection

When it comes to data protection, you want a solution that gives you the flexibility and control you need to keep your data safe. But unfortunately, some vendors try to lock you into their storage or solution, which can cause big problems down the road. This is known as vendor lock-in.

Vendor lock-in happens when you become too dependent on a vendor's product or service, making it hard to switch to a different vendor. In this scenario, your options are limited and you may struggle to leave your existing vendor.

All partners need to know the costs of a breakup. The reasons you should ask your backup vendors about how to divorce them:

  1. Limited Flexibility: When you're locked into a vendor's storage or solution, you're limited in terms of what you can do with your own data. You may not be able to move your existing backup data to another storage solution, preventing future transitions to better suited technology.

  2. Higher Costs: When locked into a vendor's storage or solution, you may be stuck paying multiple bills if you plan to migrate to another solution, especially if you must retain data for compliance purposes. Vendors are typically not commercially incentivized to make leaving easy, and this can cause unexpected costs when you're paying for both services simultaneously.

  3. Limited control over your data: When locked into a vendor's storage or solution, you may have less control over your data. This can be a major problem if you're concerned about data privacy or security.

  4. Stifles Innovation: Vendor lock-in stifles innovation by reducing competition in the market for clients that are already "locked up".

A healthy industry is filled with innovation and disruptors. When vendors are able to lock in customers, it reduces the incentive for that vendor to innovate and improve their products and services. This, in turn, limits the options and benefits available to customers.

How you can resolve this:

1. Get an agreement sorted between you and your current vendor, and make sure that you can divorce them easily if you have to. It's ultimately your data, and you are making a reasonable request to the vendor. However, they may not be willing to risk the loss of revenue by offering this to you.

2. Utilise Sahelay. Sahelay integrates with Veeam and the public cloud. This gives you the freedom to choose the storage solution that works best for you, and you can be sure that you're getting the best service at the best price without risk of vendor lock-in. By providing you with the flexibility and control you need to keep your data safe, Sahelay increases innovation and competition in the industry, and ensures that you always have the best options available to you.
